The Sanibel School
The Sanibel School serves approximately 450 students in grades kindergarten through eighth. The students live on Captiva and Sanibel Islands as well as the mainland of southwest Florida. The school is dedicated to providing a challenging academic curriculum with an emphasis on environmental education and community connection.
Teachers and staff are dedicated to the mission of going beyond the basics to enrich all students in a warm and loving atmosphere. School goals and priorities are based upon our understanding of the future and the world in which our students will live as adults.
Specials
The Sanibel School provides a variety of learning opportunities outside of the academics. All students have access to the school media center with assistance from Mr. Gene Csonka. Elementary students attend classes in the computer lab with Mrs. Amanda Seman with support from the Technology Specialist Mr. Mike Anderson. Additionally, students take Spanish classes with Ms. Nohora Rivera, physical education with Mrs. Debra Kridle, and performing arts and music with Mr. Joseph Angelo. Gifted students attend MWA classes with Mrs. Tylor Compton, and Mrs. Kathleen Tiesner provides instruction for our ESE students. In addition, Ms. Linda Reynolds, the guidance counselor, provides counseling and testing services as well as being a support resource for students, parents, and teachers.
Environment
Because the subtropical barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva offer such a unique environment, a living laboratory, Sanibel School's students focus on environmental studies throughout their island school years. Students participate in walking and biking tours to observe first hand the delicate web of plant and animal life. They research environmental issues related to the islands, plant native vegetation to replace exotics, and serve as volunteers and docents sharing their knowledge of environmental sites such as the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Preserve, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife), the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, and the Pick Preserve.
SAC and PTA
The Sanibel School has an active School Advisory Council, SAC. The School Advisory Council's purpose is to advise the principal. The Advisory Council meets approximately once each month and is responsible for developing the School Improvement Plan, SIP. SAC is composed of parents, teachers, administrators, and business and community representatives. The team works closely with the principal and staff to advise and assist with educational needs, establish priorities, inform and advise school staff of community issues, and facilitate communications among school, parents, and the community
The Sanibel School PTA has a tradition of enhancing the educational opportunities for all Sanibel students. Through the hard work of PTA members and the generosity of our wonderful island community, the PTA is able to contribute state of the art technology, musical equipment, teacher training opportunities, valuable school supplies, athletic opportunities, playground equipment, and enriching activities for all of our children.
